5 OF THE BEST SUPERFOODS YOU NEED TO ADD TO YOUR EVERYDAY DIET

What are some of the common reasons people look towards their diet to achieve their health goals

You may decide to take your diet seriously because you want to optimize your health, energy, or overall quality of life, but where do you begin?  Superfoods! Good start, but first to address a common misconception, there is no one magic superfood that will somehow make all your fat disappear or make your gut the happiest it’s ever been. To achieve “ultimate health” requires consuming the recommended amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fats to meet an adequate calorie count that matches your goals.   That said, if you want calorie calculations and a nutrition plan built for you, reach out to a nutritional expert.   I am not building you a personalized nutrition plan in the following paragraphs, but I will give you my top five “superfoods” that are nutrient dense and I strongly recommend you start incorporating into your everyday diet.

Spinach

This superfood has so many advantages, it makes me giddy just thinking about it! The main reason it’s my number 1 is because of how versatile it is–you can literally put this green in anything you make. Versatility is huge when you have to eat something every day; if you’ve ever tried a diet, you know what I’m talking about. We naturally crave diversity in our foods. Among being one of the most nutrient dense foods you can eat, spinach also has many anti-inflammatory, gastrointestinal and heart health components to it as well. Here are some excellent healthy recipes to try today!

Oats

There are so many benefits to waking up and eating oatmeal in the morning! First, it is a low-calorie meal, it contains about 150 calories in 1 cup of oatmeal. Second, first thing in the morning oatmeal helps cure any cravings you may have and, since it is a complex carbohydrate, it will keep you fuller longer. Due to its soluble and insoluble fibrous make-up, it will help lower cholesterol and stabilize your blood glucose levels. This nutrient rich meal can benefit you in more ways than one, especially when trying to reach a weight loss goal.

Berries

Tasty and healthy? Berries are in fact a super fruit. Due to their levels pf phytochemicals and their incredible taste you can enjoy a food known to protect cells from damage. This antioxidant component helps your body fight off infectious diseases and maintain a healthy immune system, which is essential while sticking to a fitness regimen. Among these key attributes the fruits help in craving your appetite and keeping you full longer, due, once again, to their high fiber content.

Sweet Potatoes

Like spinach, I feel that a major benefit of sweet potatoes are their versatility. They can take the flavor of something salty or something sweet. That said, when on a fairly strict diet this unique complex carbohydrate will cure any sweet or salty craving. The main reason I use this food in so many of my nutrition plans is due to its rare ability to slowly release its natural sugars into the bloodstream, not causing a sharp blood sugar spike. There are soooooo many ways you can cook this super food, check out some of these recipes!

Salmon

This superfood super fish can help in so many different facets of your health. Between the anti-inflammatory response due to bioactive peptides and the positive cardiovascular factors provided through high levels of essential fats, this fish is a necessary addition to your diet. Implementing salmon will positively affect your brain function due to the already abundant amount of omega 3 fatty acids in your brain. To address the elephant in the room: You may have heard about fish having high levels of mercury and if you didn’t know, lots of mercury plus your nervous system equals a very bad day.  Now, that said, salmon is considered to be one of several fish species that have low enough levels of mercury that consuming it regularly is not any cause for concern. The FDA even recommends 8-12 oz per week. Check out more information. Note: If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, always consult with a medical professional before starting any diet or increasing your fish intake, the internet does not count.
